How good is this movie?
Finally, the Star Wars sequel we’ve been waiting for! This film recaptures the magic and whimsy of the original trilogy and pays tribute to it without overdoing the references. I liked the two young leads and the new side characters. I also found myself appreciating the heck out of Harrison Ford, who realistically ages Han Solo and gives a solid performance, proving that after all these years he’s still the best thing about the franchise. The film’s weakness is the First Order, who feel too much like clones of the Empire, and especially Kylo Ren, a spoiled brat of a villain who wants to be Darth Vader but is too juvenile and self-pitying to be truly threatening. I also worry that Rey is being made too crazy powerful too early in the story and that there won’t be room for her character to develop. These are all challenges the next two movies will have to deal with.
How ace is this movie?
Finn shows clear signs of interest in Rey, but apart from that and the already-established Han and Leia relationship there’s no romance in the movie.
3 Stars; 3 Aces
(P.S.: R.I.P., Carrie Fisher. You had a strange life, and being in Star Wars probably didn’t make it any easier, but, for better or worse, you played one of my earliest female role models, and I feel like a piece of my childhood has died with you.)
