Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (1991) – Ace Mini-Review + How Ace Is Alan Rickman?

Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves

How good is this movie?

It may be because I first watched it as an adult, but the appeal of this film is quite lost on me. The heroes are flat and the villains are too ridiculous to be interesting. I guess I can see how its unapologetic goofiness might appeal to some people, but I just found it annoying.

How ace is this movie?

There is a romantic arc, of sorts, but it forms a very small part of the story.  Cheesy Bryan Adams song notwithstanding, the characters are mostly motivated by their desire for freedom and justice.

How ace is Alan Rickman?

Character: Sherriff George of Nottingham (“George”?  I thought his first name was “Cousin”.)

The Sherriff is clearly and consistently sexualised throughout the film. In one of his first scenes, Guy walks in on him undressing a girl, and we later hear him ordering women into his bedroom. He plots to marry Marian for political gain, then tries to rape her at their wedding.

What if he is?

If he is, then he’s seriously over-compensating.

2.5 Stars; 3 Aces
