Call for Submissions: January 2018 Carnival of Aces: Identity

Hello everyone! This month, I’m hosting Carnival of Aces for the first time ever! Carnival of Aces is a monthly blogging event where people from around the blogosphere write posts on a particular topic relating to asexuality. You can find the master post here. Last month’s Carnival was about “Alienation & Belonging” and was hosted by nerdingoverstuff.

This month, I want to talk about Identity, what it means and how we construct it. I was originally going to make the topic “Labels and Identities”, but decided that this topic would be a) broader and b) more original. You can write anything you want on the subject of identity, but here are some questions to get you started:

  • How strong is your sense of identity? What processes helped you create/become aware of your identity?
  • What factors are most important to your sense of identity? Race? Religion? Gender? Fandom? Where does (a)sexuality rank on the list?
  • How does the naming of identity categories like “asexual” affect our understanding of them? Is this effect always positive?
  • What is the relationship between having an idenitity and identifying as something? Are they the same? Can you do one without the other?
  • What is the relationship between labels and identity? Do labels create identity? Is it possible to have an identity without a label?
  • What’s the relationship between identity and experiences, circumstances, and personal characteristics?
  • How important are identity categories? How useful are identity politics?
  • How stable is your identity?

To participate, write your post, then send me the link, either by commenting on this post or by messaging me through the “Comment” form. I can also host guest posts if you like. Just send me the text of your post and your preferred name, and I will publish it here (so long as there’s nothing offensive about it).

Happy writing!

Working on a very big post for this… Hoping I can finish it in time, since I’m taking a couple rounds of peer feedback first. If you don’t hear from me again before the end of the month… uh, expect a late submission.

Great! Thanks for letting me know. I’ll be posting the round-up on February 1. If you can get your submission in before then, that would be ideal, but, if not, I’ll just edit it in afterwards. 🙂
