Tenet (2020) – Ace Mini-Review

Starring: John David Washington, Robert Pattinson, Kenneth Branagh
Written & Directed by: Christopher Nolan
U.K./U.S.A., 2020

How good is this movie?

You have to respect a movie that takes a difficult subject like time travel and actually tries to approach it scientifically.  The ideas are intriguing, and there are a couple of action sequences that are a lot of fun to watch.  But, in general, I found this film extremely hard to follow.  I don’t really understand the mechanics of the plot or why the characters do half the things they do.  I can easily believe this is a film that would benefit from re-watching, but I feel like, in an action movie, you should at least be able to follow the climax the first time around.

How ace is this movie?

The protagonist doesn’t really have a romantic interest or show clear signs of attraction to anyone.  He has a good working relationship with Neil, but it seems to be more of a potential friendship than an actual one.  His other most important relationship is with Kat.  He is very protective of her, but it is not clear if this is due to romantic interest, guilt, chivalry, or just basic decency.  Meanwhile, the film’s one significant married relationship is the unhappy marriage of Kat and Sator.

3 Stars; 3 Aces
