How good is this movie?

As a private citizen, I like this movie.  As someone with children in my life, I kind of love it.  It has great messages about self-confidence, perseverance, teamwork, and even empathy and kindness.  It does wander into corniness at times, but it mostly manages to stay grounded while still being unfailingly sweet.  Over all, it’s a solid piece of family entertainment.

How ace is this movie?

A couple of chaste pecks on the cheek between eleven-year-old Akeelah and Javier are the closest thing the movie has to a romantic sub-plot.  There are a few references to absent children, parents, and spouses, but all the emphasis is on familial relationships and friendships, not on romance.

3.5 Stars; 3 Aces
